Joe's Easy Diner

Doing the Christmas rush and needing to get to a mall.
We (my dearest Davida and I) grabbed a bite to eat in Canal Walk
We tried something new, Joe's Easy Diner.
Do yourself a favour and go.
It's like an old school 50's diner.
The food is worth the buck and pretty tasty!

 Awesome decor right?

Check these milkshakes!  Pretty big, couldn't finish them!
And I had chilli cheese fries!!!
Foodgasm!!

Mens wedding rings

I've had a lot of requests for wedding band recently.
But the bigger question for all the guys is:
what's the best ring for a man?

It comes down to personal choice at the end,
but guys have just as big a variety as women these days.
Guys can choose between a bunch of metals:
Silver, Yellow Gold, White Gold, Platinum, Titanium and Tungsten

If you want to keep it traditional, just go for a plain yellow gold band.

Or mix it up with an intricate design?

But for the guys who really want something different,
why not some stones in the mix?
Men these days do like something flashy.

Think about what you want and then what you need.
If you work with your hands a lot steer clear of softer metals,
like 18ct Gold or Silver, that can scratch and deform easily.
Also remember if you pic Titanium or Tungsten,
they can't be resized like the other metals,
one size for better or worse.

CPUT Jewellery Exhibition 2012

It's that time of the year when the Art and Design students exhibit all their hard work.

So last night (21 November) I went to the launch of the jewellery Dept at CPUT ( where I graduated).

All I can say is wow....  Go look!!!
It's an amazing collection of the 3rd and 4th years work,
and the 1st and 2nd years work is of an amazing standard this year!

My dearest sidekick Caru is also exhibiting her Btech range... and wow.... seriously...

Photo from CPUT website.

"The event is set to take place at the Jewellery Design Department on CPUT’s Cape Town campus, from 22 to 30 November and is open to the public.

Various award-winning pieces will be on show such as the Ashanti Collection
- that had three student finalists –
as well as the PlatAfrica Collection that won best student group design this year.
Even though the event focuses on the Jewellery Design graduates,
work by close to 60 students will be displayed.
For some student designers this will be the first time their work will be displayed to the public."

To hipster or not to hipster....

After a conversation at a party this weekend, we’ve come to the conclusion…
No one knows what a hipster is exactly.  It’s gotten a negative connection these days. A standard line used (Thank you Lauren) is “I’m not a hipster, I sell shit to hipsters”

Urban dictionary defines as such: “Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter.”

So what is a hipster?  There’s such confusion with what a hipster really is… Is it someone who has style or doesn’t have style?

“Once certain concepts of fashion and music have reached mainstream audiences, hipsters move on to something new and improved.”

I think I’ve come to the conclusion… a hipster is anyone that does what they like and enjoy.  It’s got nothing to do with being mainstream of different.  It’s about being happy about yourself.

So by all means, go be a hipster!!!

The Beach Bistro @ Eden on the Bay

Seeing as I'm turning into a foodie...
I thought I'd blog this lovely new find.
The Beach Bistro at Eden on the Bay, opened today...
My dearest friend Andrea and I walked past by chance....

And the awesome decor and look lured us in.
 How great is it?
They play really awesome lounge music
and the vibe is just great.
Not to mention the adorable bartenders :P

We were looking for breakfast, but just missed it
Breakfast is until 11:00 and there after the kitchen is closed until 12:00
until the lunch menu starts.

They have awesome coffee (which is important for me)
and Andrea was very impressed with the  way they serve water,
in a flute glass with ice and lemon.  Fancy!

We decided to try out their sandwiches:
I had the Meat Eater: Steak, Haloumi Cheese, Rocket and Onion with sweet chilli Sauce.
and Andrea had the Chicken sandwich: Chicken, Mozerella, Cherry tamatoes and rocket.

They're prices aren't bad, mid range, but the food is so worth it!
I think I've found my new Sunday brunch spot!!

Ditto | A Jewellery Exhibition

Ditto | A Jewellery Exhibition is an exhibition that was held at the Fringe Arts.  Curated by my awesome and lovely and stunning (the list goes on btw...) friend Chantal Louw.

Chantal says, “At times, without knowledge of each other, artists and designers work in remarkably similar ways. It could be the colours, the shapes or even the emotive aspect of the work that creates this link.”

The Brief: "Eight jewellery designers were asked to create works linked to the art world either being inspired by a particular artist’s style or by collaborating with an artist."

 Participating were:

Caryn Fourie from A Bird Named Frank and Peter Mikael Campbell | Eon Hoon Jewellery Design and Black Heart Gang | Gillian Fuller and Colin Payne | Emma Atkinson from Milame Design and Lindi Sales | Metaxia Sterianos from Metaxia and Rebecca Jones | Megan McFall from Starbright Girl and Carla da Cruz | Marietjie Beeselaar from Skermunkil and Marli Lyon | Anna Raimondo from Smith Jewellery and Andrew Putter

So without further ado... here's my piece I made, inspired by the Black Heart Gang.

A bit pressed...

May and June were a bit hectic on this side...
so sorry for being so quiet...

But as you can see there was a lot of press with the

Ditto | A Jewellery Exhibition

and then there was the Crush! Online project....

Ditto was curated by the awesome Chantal Louw from The Fringe Arts.

I'll post about it separately :))

and also Chantal organised the awesome (yes, awesome!) Crush! project, where we each made a piece inspired from fruit or veggies.  Sommer net so for the fun of it.

I worked with figs... soooo sticky!

I really love doing projects like this!!!

a cousins interview

A friend of mine's cousin asked me a few questions for an art project.
Thought it would be interesting to post the questions.

What is your favourite term of abuse or your favourite expletive?

Fuck.  Usually because of a design.

Do you have a creative or business muse?

I’m a big fan of my fellow contemporary jewellers.  We kind of encourage each other.

Are there things you would have done differently?

Many, but then I’d have to kill you.

Who in the world would you most like to have a drink with?

Jane Alexander

What advice would you give to emerging designers?

Always have a plan B, with every design and job.

What's your favourite gadget?

My iPad and the drawing application I recently downloaded.

What's one thing that you haven't done that you would still really like to do?

Just travel for a while. Go somewhere I’ve never been.

What’s the first thing you think of when we say insanity?

My dear friend, Lauren.  That girl entertains me…

What are you passionate about?

Jewellery!  My friends and family are very important to me. As are the headaches they give me.

Do you still have a love for design?

It’s going to take a lot to kill mine.

What are you doing currently?

Designing an entire new range for summer.  Working on one or two little things for friends and family.

What do you do with failed projects?

Make a feature from a fuckup.  Put it to the side.  In a while, relook at it, redesign and rethink and maybe cannibalise some of the ideas for other designs.

Eco friendly pickle

I've been experimenting a little bit to find a cheaper and safer cleaning solution for jewellery making.
Lo an behold, I have.
Researching a bit, some experiments and a few chats.
Here's the solution: vinegar and salt.
So my fellow jewellers, make a batch like so:
2 parts vinegars to 1 part salt.
so 100 ml vinegar and 50ml salt
Mix the salt into the vinegar, it'll become cloudy and pour it into your pickle pot.
Heat it up and voila!
Just be warned you will be craving fish and chips the whole time!!!

Hippo Brooch

In total boredom this weekend, I was watching a certain television series.
One of the main characters had a cute little hippo brooch on.
And yes, I made one too, just because it looked so cute.
The shield is made in brass and the head a toy I cut to pieces.
I've had such a good response about it though...
My next one is going to be a pink flamingo....
