The Remake Challenge

Kin has some brilliant ideas, and their latest one
gave me the pleasure of taking part in the Remake Challenge.
They teamed 5 of their jewellery designers up with one of the fashion finalists.

I was partnered with Kelly Ricardo a edgy wild child and I loved her energy and ideas.
To pair with her collection I came up with these babies:

Yes, they are all made out of pencils.
The irony being that I recycled into my designs just as Remake includes that in their brief.
Really loved this project and can't wait to take these designs further.
But best of all, love seeing the talent from the competition.

In collaboration with Kin
I've done a window exhibition.
More on that here.

And part of the exhibition I played around
with a honeycomb of beeswax I was gifted.

I originally wanted to cast them,
but no success as it's just too delicate.

So what happened is we had them electroformed.
It's a long winded explination, but basically
metal gets formed via an electric current over the actual object.
So that means the beeswax is still inside the pendant.

These lovely copper shapes are strung on an oxidised sterling silver chain.
And they're a once off, set of 7.

Buzz buzz....

Buzzing bling

I've had the privilege to do my first window exhibition at Kin on Kloof this month.
This exhibition focuses on my use of bees in my jewellery.
Which I have a bit of an obsession with.

This elaborate beehive structure (that I built by hand) houses 21 once off pieces.
Especially the honeycomb necklaces (more on that later).
Filled with facts about bees as well, I decided to inform people of these lovely little workers.

You know bees are currently dying out? And humanity would not be able to survive without them.
In fact we'd have less than four years before we follow them.
More than a 3rd of our food is produced by the help of bees.

Honeycombs  are the most efficient structures in nature -
the walls meet at a precise 120-degree angle, a perfect hexagon.

Go have a look:

Gems, so many gems.

Being the bad blogger that I am... I realised I need to blog again...

So just to warm up.
Here's a little preview of a some of the gems I recently acquired.

Most of these are included, loving that.
Gives them more character.

Including this massive 3000 carat Blue Sapphire.

I'm not a big fan of using stones in my jewellery... but things need to change.

Bad blogger bad!

Whoops... I've been a very bad blogger.
I haven't posted in aaages.
You may whip me.

In between running a business and designing and teaching and managing help and exhibitions and doing this and that and trying to breathe and eat and just having a social life.... *breathe* I might have forgotten I have a blog...

I blame designing and being on the bench 24/7

Foodie Post: Bread at The Bromwell

Continuing on my promise to post things more regularly on my blog.
I give thee another post about food.
Yes, I eat a lot.

This time I went to one of my stockists, The Bromwell Boutique Mall,
250 Albert Road, Woodstock,
Cape Town

and had lunch with the girls (my dearest Davida and Hestia)
at their restaurant: Bread.
I suggest checking this place out and
then you can go upstairs and buy some of my jewellery *cough cough*

2 words: oh wow.
I've never really had the chance to just relax and take the place in.
Try their orange juice btw...
I think I won't have a cold for months now.

As for lunch...
You need to see the sandwich menu.
Oh wow...
The girls had pork belly ribs.

I had the bacon and Brie,
"Crispy bacon with creamy Brie cheese with fresh mixed
leaves, cranberries and our famous potato chunks"
I'm a sucker for Bacon and this thing is worth it just for the side salad!
Rocket galore.

Anyway I'm done rambling and singing their praises...
Here is a gratuitous shot of my sandwich (which I did not Instagram for a change!)

The Zoo.Part 2

I've been a little quiet on the blogging front...
You know making jewellery, designing it and ruinning the show...
gets in the way.
I promise I'll do more...

Here's a little snack for fun.
Smaller versions of my animal brooches.
Animal pins!
