Baking News: Red Velvet Brownies

Seeing as baking is turning into my latest hobby...
Need something to do besides make jewellery (blasphemy I know)
I tried this little experiment:  Red Velvet Brownies.
Making them is pretty darn easy, only took 10 mins to make the batter.
Getting the swirl isn't that easy though...
I'll just have to make more until I perfect it (see what I did there?)
But the final product is damn tasty!

Foodie | Beach Bistro |

Some time ago I stumbled upon Beach Bistro at Eden on The Bay

So last night I stumbled that way again :)
Some really strong cocktails (I had a Hibiscus Mojito)
and awesome burgers...

My burger.  The Big Cheese.
Beef Patty. Bacon, Cheddar, Blue Cheese and Feta

While I was there I found out they're under new management.
It's still as awesome as I remember it.

Some Ratchet Bling

I got to make this cool ring the other day.
Plays with two of my favourite things:
cool fonts and weird shapes.

His birthday party theme was "Ratchet"
No idea what that really means.

Foodie | Maestro's on the Beach |

So Andrea dragged me to dinner again.
This time we tried Maestro's at the Beach
on Woodbridge Island in Milnerton.
Awesome view of the ocean.

I tried the Jessica Simpson Sirloin Steak

 Peppadew, Camambert, Bacon and Avocado...
Nom Nom Nom...
 Andrea had the Angelina Pizza.
Bacon, Caramalised Onions, Peppadew, blue cheese, rocket and Avocado.
and people... Creme Brule...
I am a snob when it comes to this dessert.
I approved.

Foodie Alert: Cheese Cake

Keeping with my foodie blogposts...
and the fact that I didn't go to a cool place for lunch or something the weekend...
I do want to post this:
A cheesecake I baked for my best friends baby shower.

The item in question:
a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cheese Cake

The crust is completely made from chocolate biscuits.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough balls are folded into the batter.

 Baked in it's delicious glory.

Unfortunately if you mix a cheesecake too hard, it will crack on top when baked.

And this is a side view of the cake....
nom nom....

and just for bragging rights,
here is a picture of me with my beautiful niece.

If you want the recipe, email me, I might consider it.
It's a bit too long to write on a blog post. :)

Eating at Gourmet Boerie

I eat out way too much these days... So I thought...
let's add a foodie segment to the blog.So Saturday,
I dropped in with my Lovely Assistant Andrea to my favourite spot in Kloof Street.Gourmet Boerie.
We decided to share the slider platter,
since she had never tried the place before.
And just for the record, I would rather have the sliders to myself than to share.

Only realised I needed to take a photo after 3 sliders... oops....
My favourite by far is the Pure Sophistication, but the Mexican is Drawing my attention.
See the menu here.
Check these awesome shoestring chips and the sweet potatoe fries...

I had mine with a Devils Peak Draft.
And this rad dessert platter.... The Vanilla Ice Cream...
and I'm a Milktart (Melktert) connosuer....
I approve...

They are available on my Hello Pretty Store.

Each is a polished brass shield
with a sterling silver pin and catch

These are the latest ones I made...

Diamonds are a girls best friend...

I've been getting a lot of questions regarding buying diamonds for an engagement ring. What's the right one? How do we pick? What's not good?

For the first time buyer, or even if you’re seasoned, buying one is daunting.  So I've put together a handy guide using the 4 C’s to help you.

Probably the most important of the C’s is Cut, determining your stones shape.  Whether it’s round or the popular Princess cut or even a fancier one, such as Pear Shaped, each stone is uniquely cut make the most of it's shine and maximise its potential.

The Colour's Chart is probably the most daunting one.  The whiter (colourless) a stone is, the more it’s worth.  Stones that are valued less have a slight yellow tinge. You also get ones with a very vibrant colour called fancy yellow and the rarest of all Diamonds can be coloured pink, blue or even red. Just keep in mind, the fancier the colour: the rarer the stone and thus more the more expensive.

Clarity refers to stones having flaws.  Most of these you can’t see with the naked eye, the less of these, the higher your stones value.

And then Carat.  This refers to the stones size in terms of weight, the higher the carat, the rarer the stone is and the more expensive it is.  The closer the stone becomes to a true carat the more you’ll pay.   For example a 0.48ct is much more affordable than 0.5ct which in turn is much less than 1 Carat Diamonds.

For more in depth information please go here.

Hopefully this helps a little.  The more you know, the easier it is for your jeweller to help you and the less stress for you.  Think of it as buying a new car (talking to you boys), you want to check the horsepower before you take it for a test drive.

:)
